Camping and Gate Fees

Bent Wheel Bash in Abilene is coming up soon. We hope everyone is making plans to travel out to our neck of the woods! Come on out early if you can and check out the Specialized Demo Van. They will be set up at the venue on Saturday, April 2, from noon to 5 pm. They have a variety of bikes on their van that you will be able to test out. Come on out and see what they have to offer!  This year, our food vendor will be set up on Saturday from 12-2 and on Sunday from 10:30-2. We are excited to have one of our local food trucks, The Toasted Traveler, come out for the event. You can check them out at

Camping and RV spots are available – no reservations necessary. There are no hookups, but generators are allowed and showers are available. Propane grills are fine, but the Police Academy asks that there be no open fires. For those who haven’t been to Bent Wheel Bash before, Buck Creek Trails is right next to our local police academy, and the academy allows us to use their land and buildings for our start/finish, expo, and camping area.

Of course, there is always the question of land access fees. We know that Abilene is a bit further for most people to drive, so we try to keep fees down. The land use fee is $10 PER CAR (not per person), so pack everyone in and carpool if you can! We only charge once, so if you come out on Friday, that $10 fee covers the whole weekend. Camping spots are $20 per site for one night or $30 for both nights. So, if you drive out on Friday and camp both nights, the most you will pay in land use/camping fees for one car is $40. The nice part (if there can be a nice part about paying fees) is that all the proceeds from Bent Wheel Bash go to our local police department. If camping isn’t your thing, but you need to spend the night somewhere, here is a list of some hotels close to the trails. There is a rather large country music event going on the same weekend, so if you need a hotel, call soon. We hope to see a bunch of you in Abilene soon!

Save the date for Bent Wheel Bash 2016! This year, our mountain bike race will be held the weekend of April 2-3. There will be one change in the schedule this year. The 12 & Under and 10 & Under age categories will race late Saturday afternoon, April 2. Everyone else will race on Sunday, April 3. The change to Saturday only affects boys and girls age 12 and under. If kids are racing in any category age 13 and up, they will still race on Sunday. Once again, all proceeds from Bent Wheel Bash will benefit the Abilene Police Department. Make plans now to come out to Buck Creek Trails and race!

Raffle, Prizes, Medals

We are getting everything sorted and organized for this weekend. Here is a peek at some of the items being raffled off in the Cat 3 raffle, as well as a look at the medals and Cat 2 prizes. Cat 3s – everyone will have a chance to enter the raffle after your race. There are some fun items being given away by BikeTown. You will want to hang out till the end of the raffle! The weather has really warmed up this week. It looks like the trails will be in fantastic shape for this weekend. We look forward to seeing you there!

Food at the Venue and Other Pertinent Info

There will be food available at the race venue on Sunday only. Steak Express will have their food truck out there from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm on Sunday. They will be selling plates which include a hamburger, chips, and sweet tea for $8. They will also sell each item separately if you only want the tea, etc. The Abilene Police Department Bike Unit will have a concession stand open as well. They will be selling sports drinks and bottled water, as well as coffee and some breakfast burritos. We would love it if you buy food at the venue since this money directly benefits the Abilene Police Department Bike Unit and the Police Academy. However, if those items aren’t your cup of tea, there are several restaurants just a couple of miles away from the trails, including Chili’s, Jason’s Deli, Cracker Barrel, Chick-Fil-A, Taco Casa, Panda Express, and Golden Chick. These places are all located on Hwy 351. A few miles further down the road on Judge Ely Blvd., you can find Schlotzky’s, McAlister’s Deli, Rosa’s Cafe, Taco Bueno, Wholly Cow, and Lytle Land and Cattle.

There are a few guidelines that we have to follow since the APD is allowing us to use their grounds. If you are camping, the APD requests that you do not have any open fires. Gas grills are just fine, though. Also, dogs are welcome as long as they are leashed. Finally, since the venue is on the Police Academy training grounds, no alcohol is allowed. Thanks for understanding and following the guidelines!
